Utilising Positive Psychology to Alleviate Holiday Stress

For many Australians, and indeed people worldwide, the upcoming holiday season may not hold the same anticipation and joy as in previous years.
With bushfires, the COVID-19 pandemic and now wide-spread flooding, financial stress and loneliness are appearing as key concerns.
As workplaces start to shut their doors for the holiday period, employers should look to support their workers throughout this time.
Martin Seligman, one of the founders of positive psychology developed a five-core element model of psychological well-being and happiness that is designed for people to build on the good in their lives, rather than focusing on the negatives.
Made up of five core tenants - Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Achievement, employers can leverage the (PERMA™) model to ensure their employees feel supported and connected throughout the holiday period and return to work invigorated in the new year.
Positive Emotions
Encourage your team to focus on the positives they have achieved throughout the year and to express gratitude to themselves and their fellow workers.
Engagement
Talk to your staff about using the break to recharge for the forthcoming year. Encourage them to think about what areas they may want to challenge themselves in when they return to work.
Relationships
Facilitate opportunities for your staff to connect over the break. Create optional activities for staff who may be alone over the holidays such as virtual games nights or New Year drinks.
Meaning
A shared sense of meaning in the workplace leads to higher work satisfaction. Take the time before the break to express gratitude to your team for their contribution to the company’s vision and mission.
Achievement
Along with expressing gratitude to your team, take the time to acknowledge their individual achievements as they head into their holiday break.
