You don’t have to be an expert to practice mindfulness. Here are some tips on how to begin your journey to great mental health!

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is about being fully engaged in the present moment, without judgment or distraction. It’s a perfect example of an activity that can be practiced in lots of different ways without needing to take up too much time. It is amongst the most effective activities in building mental wellbeing and reducing psychological distress.

What are some benefits?

  • Reduced anxiety and stress

  • Increased emotional regulation

  • Better memory

  • Cognitive improvements

  • Stronger relationships

  • Better physical health

  • Better mental health

Being mindful also allows one to be more aware of their thoughts and emotions (especially negative ones) and deal with them effectively instead of actively trying to fight or control them.

Top tips to get started

  1. Become aware of your surroundings in your daily life. Pay attention to the sounds, smells and colours around you.

  2. Pay attention to your breathing. Breathe in deeply and breathe out slowly, being aware of your body and how you’re feeling.

  3. Practice Meditation. Use apps such as Be Well Plan to get started.

  4. Remember that you can practice mindfulness exercises anywhere, anytime!

Here are some activities to try!

  1. Mindful Breathing: use breathing techniques to ground yourself during moments of stress.

  2. Mindful Walking: be present when you walk and take a moment to ground yourself.

  3. Mindful Eating: appreciate the food you eat by practicing being present.

  4. Mindful Physical activity: explore the way your body and mind feel when you work out.

  5. Yoga: use physical activity combined with mindfulness to de-stress your mind and body.
