Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (from dawn to sunset), prayer, reflection, community and acts of charity.
Today, all Australian workplaces are made up of a multicultural and diverse workforce. Therefore, it is important for employers to be aware and take necessary steps to support their employees during Ramadan.
Here are some tips for employers:
Have a conversation
Everyone has a personal approach and preferences when it comes to the practice of their faith. It is important for employers to speak to their staff about preferences in order to implement beneficial arrangements.
Offer flexible working arrangements
During Ramadan along with fasting, many Muslim employees dedicate time to community and charity events which can impact their energy levels at work. Therefore, allowing for flexible working arrangements e.g., early start and finish times can help provide support to the employees. In addition to this, employers may also want to consider leave requests towards the end of Ramadan.
Encourage an inclusive environment
To support employees observing Ramadan and create an inclusive environment, employers should create spaces for prayer and be mindful when organising team meals to do so after daylight hours.
These simple tips can create a huge difference and allow employees to feel supported and included in the workplace.
