Tips for Remote Team Managers

Remote work offers increased flexibility, however it also comes with its own challenges!
Some of these challenges can include:
Poor wi-fi connection
Misinterpretation of messages
Lack of accountability
So, what are some things you need to be aware of as a remote team manager?
Expectations around instant replies
Instant Messaging services such as Teams can influence managers to expect fast responses. This may not always be the case if team members are occupied with work. Having such expectations can also lead to severe burnout.
Tip 1: Adopt an asynchronous work style approach where replying as and when is encouraged.
Encourage deep work sessions and make it clear that it is ok for employees to reply as and when they can, as having to reply to something right away can be disrupting.
Back-to-back team meetings
At times, managers tend to find themselves in back to back team meetings, which can cause fatigue.
Tip 2: Give yourself and team members breaks in between meetings (make time to stretch, tune-off and stay hydrated). Additionally, leave 5–10-minute buffer between scheduling meetings.
Accessibility to the team
Deadlines and high workload can make it difficult for managers to make time for their direct reports.
Tip 3: Block out time in your calendar each week dedicating it to team members, ensuring they are aware of it (visible to them) and can reach out as required.
Micromanagement
Many managers can be tempted to micromanage in order to stay on top of the deadlines and workload. However such behaviour can have a negative effect on the team’s morale and productivity.
Tip 4: Use Project Management Tools such as Trello for visibility over projects and ongoing work.
Gaslighting
Gaslighting happens when a person invalidates what is known to be true to someone, forcing them to then question facts and their ability to do their job. In a work setting this could be missing an important email but saying you did not receive it.
Tip 5: Create an open and safe environment by being honest and holding yourself accountable. This will also encourage the team to own up to their mistakes.
